About Goa Cashew Nuts
 International yet Indigenous
The English name 'Cashew' is derived from the Portuguese name, for the fruit of the cashew tree, ‘Caju, which in turn derives from the indigenous Brazilian name, acajú. The humble Goan cashew nut has its roots originally from the South and Central Americas. This versatile fruit and nut was discovered by the ever expanding Portuguese missionaries’ way back in the 15th century.
During their 500 plus years of rule in Goa, the Portuguese introduced the cashew tree, ANACARDIUM OCCIDENTALE in this colony of theirs. Goa being a tropical area, the sunny climate was very hospitable for the growth of this fruit & nut species locally. Goa was the first place for the Cashew to be introduced in India, later it was introduced to Konkan areas of Malabar, Maharashtra and Kerala. But the best and tastiest cashew nuts are the ones that are locally grown within the geographical state of Goa.

The uniqueness of the originally introduced breed of Cashew tree has been able to be sustained as a huge majority of farmers and agriculturalists have thankfully not adapted to chemical & fertilizers for the sustainable growth of their cashew plantations. Hence cashewnuts of Goa are generally organically produced and are healthy for regular consumption.

Today, India dominates the world cashew market. Over 685,000 hectares are under cashew cultivation here. With an average annual export worth US$ 564 million, India meets two thirds of world demand for cashew. USA is the largest buyer of Indian cashews, followed by EU, Japan, Australia, Canada, Russia, Hong Kong, Singapore and the Middle East. Currently 11 states of India are regularly involved in cashew nut plantations, but the highly demanded ones are the locally grown cashew nuts of Goa.
